I'm in the same boat as you are, but I will admit 5150 was in heavy rotation on my Walkman for awhile. Eventually I did go back to 1984 and Van Halen I as the albums I listened to regularly. One thing I have found to be amusing over the years is that I have met people who say Van Halen is their favorite band. Most of these people seem to like both iterations of the group equally, and in my mind that just does not compute. 😉

I think all of us who lived through the 80s listened to 5150 and all those Hagar albums that were in heavy rotation… but if I were making a Van Halen Greatest Hits Mixtape — greatest hits meaning my favorite songs — I think it would only contain songs from 1984 and before. Just like my Metallica mixtape would only contain songs from the Black album and earlier. ;)

Ugh, was not a fan of Van Hagar, and 1984 was a massive album for my life, so many associations!

Post-Roth, all I can picture is SNL doing a take-off on their “Right Now” Pepsi Clear ads, with clear gravy. Remember that, Sonny? 😁🤘

Haha, I DO remember that! I realize the band got its name from Alex and Eddie but I almost wish they had changed their name to Van Hagar or something else when they changed singers. They just feel like two completely different bands to me, one of which I’d go see live and one I wouldn’t.

I guess it was kind of like Black Sabbath when they switched to Dio. Shrug. I agree, Roth Van Halen was a FORCE. Van Hagar was a band your dad liked. 😁
